"Economic indicators for the Nashville metropolitan area are mixed for the third quarter, continuing a trend of slower growth beginning with the first quarter" according to the Fall 2006 issue of the Midstate Economic Indicators publication issued by Middle Tennesse State University's Business and Economic Research Center.
"Slower growth for the Nashville economy can be attributed to slower
national economic growth and slower local housing construction" as
evidenced by a -9.6% drop in in single-family building permits (the largest decline sinceQ4 of 2000) and a -2.0% decline in taxable sales (estimated), and a 7.0% increase in unemployment.
Other aspects of the regional economy that are offsetting these declines include a 0.8% increase in employment, a 1.7% increase in hours worked in manufacturing per week, a 1.2% increase in hotel tax revenue, and a 6.2% increase in total air passengers traveling through the Nashville International Airport.
